Out in the Open: Conservation Challenges of Outdoor Public Art

A panel of professionals charged with the care of public art collections explored issues related to the management and conservation of outdoor artworks, including the physical environment, vandalism, funding, and public awareness.

This conversation with the artist, moderated by the GCI's Tom Learner, investigated the production, conservation, and display challenges that surround Valentine's work.

Susan Macdonald, head of field projects at the Getty Conservation Institute, led a panel of experts in a discussion on the preservation of historic cities and towns in the midst of rapid urban growth and change.

On April 14 conservator and archaeologist Roberto Nardi recounted the steps taken to conserve and safeguard the Transfiguration mosaic, a jewel of early Byzantine art, located in the basilica of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai.

Often the difficult decisions being made by conservators for modern and contemporary art are highly complex, ethical dilemmas, and in many cases there are clear disagreements on how to resolve conflicting values. A panel of experts, including conservators, collection managers, and curators discussed the ethical considerations they are faced with when dealing with the ephemeral and transitory nature of many modern and contemporary artworks.

MYhistoricLA: Preserving Los Angeles

This public kickoff of Survey LA, Los Angeles' first-ever citywide survey of its historic resources was held at the Los Angeles Central Library and included a moderated panel discussion and screenings of the SurveyLA video. Conservation of the Ahichhatragarh-Nagaur Fort in India

Architect Minakshi Jain discussed how the previously dilapidated Ahichhatragarh-Nagaur Fort in India was dramatically transformed into a stunning model for the conservation of historic sites. A recipient of UNESCO's Award for Excellence in Cultural Heritage Conservation, the Ahichhatragarh project was recognized for setting new conservation standards by combining modern scientific methods with traditional building techniques.

For a Lasting Landscape: Paradise "Re-found" in the Gardens of Brécy

Eric Haskell, professor of French studies and humanities at Scripps College, and director of the Clark Humanities Museum at Scripps, spoke about the garden at Château de Brécy, located near the coast of Normandy, France. This dazzling, small-scale formal garden, constructed during the second half of the seventeenth century, underwent one of the most successful landscape preservation projects in Europe.

Object in Transition: Contemporary Voices
January 24, 2008

Artists Robert Gober, Rachel Harrison, Paul McCarthy, and Doris Salcedo joined curator Elisabeth Sussman and conservator Christian Scheidemann in discussing the often complex production process of their art works, the ephemeral nature of some of the modern materials from which they are created, and the implications this may have for the long-term survival of their art.

10th International Conference on the Study and Conservation of Earthen Architecture (2008)
This conference—the tenth to be organized by the earthen architecture community under the aegis of ICOMOS and the first to be held in Africa—provided a unique opportunity to discuss and observe firsthand conservation issues particular to sub-Saharan Africa, a region rich in earthen architecture.

Modern Paints Uncovered (2006)
This symposium, co-organized by Tate, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and the Getty Conservation Institute, was the first to ever focus exclusively on conservation issues surrounding modern paints.

Lessons Learned: Reflecting on the Theory and Practice of Mosaic Conservation (2005)
This ninth triennial meeting of the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics (ICCM) was coorganized by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunisia.

Second International Conference on the Conservation of Ancient Sites on the Silk Road (2004)
This international gathering—a follow-up to the 1993 conference—provided a forum for the latest ideas, experiences, methods, techniques, and research findings on the conservation and management of grotto sites.

This conference examined current research and practice in art history and conservation of 20th century mural painting in the Americas.

The study of painting techniques and materials used throughout history in various cultures was the focus of this conference.

The Conservation of Archaeological Sites in the Mediterranean Region (1995)
This conference sought to define more fully the values that archaeological sites hold for humanity, and to develop processes to manage and present these sites.

The Future of Asia's Past: Preservation of the Architectural Heritage of Asia (1995)
The goal of this conference was to bring together scholars, policymakers, developers, and tourism officials to exchange ideas and to begin creating a framework for more coordinated preservation efforts in the region.

National Summit on Emergency Response: Safeguarding Our Cultural Heritage (1994)
The purpose of this meeting was to initiate the development of a national emergency infrastructure for cultural institutions.

International Conference on the Conservation of Ancient Sites on the Silk Road (1993)

Conservation issues in Asia and the Pacific, with particular attention to policies and conditions specific to the region, were the focus of this symposium.

International Seminar on the Conservation of Cultural Property within the Urban Environment (1990)
Participants at this seminar exchanged information and discussed strategies for preserving historic districts while respecting social, political, and economic realities.

6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture (Adobe 90)(1990)
This conference served as a forum for the exchange of ideas, methods, techniques, and research findings among scientists and practitioners specializing in the preservation of earthen architecture.

In Situ Archaeological Conservation (1986)
At this conference, archaeologists and conservators discussed the problems associated with conserving archaeological materials.

An International Meeting on the Study of Oriental Lacquerware (1985)
