During the first phase of the GCI's Seismic Retrofitting Project comprehensive damage and construction assessments were developed for four historic earthen sites in Peru that together represent building typologies found in the Latin American region.
Volume 1 synthesizes the data obtained during the first phase, providing a detailed description of the project methodology and a description and condition assessment of the prototype buildings.
Volume 2 provides samples of the survey forms developed for the project and architectural and detailed prospection drawings prepared for the prototype buildings.
The results of phase I informed the development of the numerical modeling and experimental testing methodology, as well as the design of retrofitting solutions in later project phases.

The Seismic Retrofitting Project, part of the GCI's Earthen Architecture Initiative, is a collaboration of the GCI, University College London, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and the Ministerio de Cultura del Perú. The project aims to design and test historical and new seismic retrofitting techniques for historic earthen buildings; provide guidance on implementing the techniques to architects, engineers, and conservators; and work with building regulation authorities to gain acceptance of these techniques.
