The Conservation of Outdoor Contemporary Murals
Detail of The Runners, 1983, by Otis College of Art and Design students and Kent Twitchell, faculty. This mural, painted on an underpass of the 101 freeway in Los Angeles, shows a range of damage. Damage includes rust stains down the surface caused by water runoff from above, vandalism that has left the eyes of the runner gouged, and misguided attempts to paint out graffiti, which in turn has obscured the lower half of the mural.
