About the Symposium
The four-day symposium will focus on the history of photography and photograph conservation in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, and Slovenia.
The first and second days will feature lecturers speaking on the challenges of photograph conservation, the world history of photograph conservation, and the current state of photograph conservation education. Representatives from each participating country will describe their country's history of photography, its notable photograph collections, and current photograph conservation efforts.
On the third day, a roundtable discussion will be held on management and conservation needs of photograph collections—whether they are housed in fine art or historical museums, state or institutional archives, or in important private photograph collections—and how to best address these needs. The discussion will provide an opportunity for the dynamic exchange of ideas to benefit the development of photograph research, and conservation practice and education in the region.
On the final day, a tour will be offered to local museums in Bratislava and other points of interest.
The goal of this symposium is to serve as a catalyst for an international collaboration to establish photograph education and training programs to preserve the rich photograph heritage of central, southern, and eastern Europe.
The symposium will also be an important step for the development of the Getty Conservation Institute's educational initiative, "Conservation of Photographs and Photograph Collections for Countries in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe," scheduled to begin in September 2008.
The official language of the symposium will be English.
