Historic Cities and Urban Settlements Initiative
Component One: Design and Coordination of the Scientific Content of the OWHC Biannual Congresses 2005–2009
The GCI has been responsible for the design and coordination of the scientific content of the OWHC biannual congresses in 2005, 2007, and 2009. Each congress focuses on a specific topic collaboratively defined by the OWHC, the hosting city, and the GCI. The theme is selected based on the specific experiences or interests of the hosting city and serves the members of the OWHC by addressing current issues and offering new approaches for the conservation of historic cities.
Component Two: Research
This research work seeks to identify critical challenges in the conservation of historic cities. Specifically, this includes a Web-based survey to identify the most common problems, and an experts meeting of professionals and politicians to discuss the most urgent issues confronting the conservation of historic cities. This work aims to identify needs in the field and to develop actions that will improve outcomes of conservation efforts.
