About MOSAIKON
MOSAIKON is a partnership of four institutions: the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, ICCROM, and ICCM. The aims of the project are to strengthen the network of professionals concerned with the conservation, restoration, maintenance, and management of mosaic heritage; provide training to a variety of individuals involved in mosaics conservation and, more generally, with the management of archaeological sites and museums with mosaics; work with national and international bodies to provide a more favorable legislative, regulatory, and economic environment for the conservation of mosaics in the Mediterranean; and promote the dissemination and exchange of information.

Four major components of the MOSAIKON initiative have been established:
• strengthening of an international professional community;
• in situ conservation of mosaics at archaeological sites;
• conservation of lifted mosaics in museums and storage;
• development of conservation education at the university level in the region.

Each one of these major components is an umbrella for a number of supporting activities.

Conservation and Management of Mosaics on Archaeological Sites

Fifteen site managers from Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, and Tunisia took part in the three-week workshop at the site of Tyre, Lebanon. Together with an international group of instructors, the participants considered the significance of mosaics on archaeological sites and strategies for their management and conservation. Guided by the course instructors, participants are currently applying knowledge gained during the Tyre workshop to projects at their own sites. In 2011, workshop participants and instructors will reconvene for a follow-up meeting.

Training of Museum Professionals

A three-week workshop titled Saving the Mosaics in Museums of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean is planned for the first half of 2012. This course, led by MOSAIKON partner ICCROM, will include participants from the region who are in charge of day-to-day management of lifted mosaics in museums and storage. This course will discuss how to create the best conditions for their preservation. In preparation for this course, a survey was circulated to museums in the regionto establish the status of lifted mosaics in the southern and eastern Mediterranean, providing a replicable model for future surveys.
