Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (American Civil War, 1862)

Note: American Civil War naval engagement at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a harbour at the mouth of the James River. It is notable as history’s first battle between ironclad warships. The Confederate ship CSS Virginia, built from remnants of the USS Merrimack, fought the Union ship USS Monitor over two days to a standstill, then the Virginia retired.
