Margaret of Antioch, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Legendary saint, declared apocryphal by Pope Gelasius I in 494, but devotion to her resurfaced during the Crusades. The century in which she is supposed to have lived varies by account. According to the version of the story in Golden Legend, she was a native of Pisidian Antioch in Asia Minor, the daughter of a pagan priest named Aedesius. She embraced Christianity and consecrated her virginity to God. When Roman governor Olybrius wished to marry her, she refused to give up her faith and was cruelly tortured and the subject of miraculous incidents. In art sometimes as a shepherdess, or as leading a chained dragon, again carrying a little cross or a girdle in her hand, or standing by a large vessel which recalls the cauldron into which she was plunged. Patron of pregnant women.
