Luke, Saint (Christian character)

Note: One of the four evangelists; his symbol is an ox, a sacrificial animal referencing the temple, because the gospel of Luke begins with Zachary, the father of John the Baptist, being unwelcome in the temple. Luke traditionally was believed to be a physician, a disciple of Paul, and a painter who painted a portrait of the Virgin Mary. It is generally held that St. Luke was a native of Antioch, Eusebius (Church History III.4.6). The name Lucas seems to have been unknown before the Christian Era; but Lucanus is common in inscriptions, and is found at the beginning and end of the Gospel in some Old Latin manuscripts. He is believed to have died a martyr, although consistent accounts of a martyrdom are lacking.
