Stanza della Segnatura Cycle (frescoes (paintings); Raphael, for Pope Julius II; 1508-1511; Vatican Palace )

Note: Belongs to the projects of Raphael for decorating the Stanze (‘rooms’) in the pope’s private apartments in the Vatican Palace. Between 1508 and 1511, he worked on the Stanza della Segnatura. Scenes include the following: Dispute Concerning the Holy Sacrament (La Disputà); the School of Athens; Parnassus; and allegories of Virtues with Tribonian Delivering the Pandects to Justinian; and Gregory IX Receiving the Decretals from St Raymond de Penafort. The subjects represent theology, philosophy, poetry, and jurisprudence, respectively, themes mirrored in allegorical and biblical subjects included on the vault. After this probject, he moved on to frescoes for the Stanza d’Eliodoro from 1511 to 1514.
