Pennsylvania German Dish (dish; Samuel Troxel (American potter, active 1820s); 1823) | |
Note: Known from detailed rendering in the National Gallery of Art, Washington: This oval dish with scalloped edges was elaborately decorated by the sgraffito technique. Notice the bold floral design that contrasts with the light strokes of lettering that form a delicate border. Splashes of green worked into the glaze heighten the color of the red clay that is exposed. The dish was made by Samuel Troxel. The inscription reads: "From clay and many skills, the potter fashions what he will, July the 19th 1823.“ | |
