Crohin-La Fontaine Hours (illuminated manuscript; Master of the Dresden Prayer Book and workshop (Flemish, act...; around 1480-1485 ?; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 86.ML.606; Ms. 23)

Note: 214 folios, 12 half-page miniatures, 21 historiated initials, 2 full-page coats of arms. Although no records show who originally owned the book when it was made at the end of the 1400s, it is known to have passed through the hands of two noble owners in the 1500s, members of the Crohin and La Fontaine families. They both added full-page miniatures with their coats of arms to the book, indicating the pride subsequent owners took in possessing a book of such distinguished artistry. In this luxurious Flemish book of hours, a full-page miniature and a pair of full borders mark the beginning of each new section. Despite their small size, the miniatures in this book possess the breadth and expansiveness of large-scale paintings. This convincing illusion of space and atmosphere is the hallmark of the Master of the Dresden Prayer Book.

Markings: Markings: Fol. 13 miniature marked with the coat-of-arms of Marguerite Crohin held by a winged female figure, flanked by labeled coats-of-arms of the Crohin, Hannemau, Perssant, and Joie families. Fol. 29 marked with full-page coat-of-arms of Lois de la Fontaine (called Wicart), Knight of Jerusalem, Seigneur de Salmonsart de la Bassée en Ugies, dated 1572, flanked by coats-of-arms of the La Fontaine, Crestien, Lois, and Crohin families. Back flyleaf marked with the stamp of "J. Schavye, relieur de S.M. le roi, Bruxelles".
