Mercenary Soldier in a Landscape (drawing (visual work); Circle of Wolfgang Huber (Austrian painter, draftsman, and a...; ca. 1515; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.14)
Note: The proposed sheet depicts a mercenary soldier holding up a drinking cup. Placed in the immediate foreground, the soldier towers over the rocks and shrubs he stands upon. His military might is suggested by the cup of wine he dynamically raises in a gesture of victory. Lavish attention has been paid to the slashed sleeves and doublet, tight hose, feathered cap, and sword. This flamboyant clothing and its accoutrements were typically reserved for aristocrats and thus impart the mercenary with an enhanced sense of status. Around 1500, the mercenary was frequently depicted in German and Swiss graphic art. Artists, together with their public, were fascinated with the soldier's violent life on the battlefield, lavish, attention-getting clothing, and perturbing fondness of prostitutes, gambling, and drink. All of these compelling traits inspired artists to treat the subject of the "Landsknecht" (mercenary soldier) with virtuoso line work in pen. We already have two examples of mercenary soldiers in our collection by the Dürer pupil Sebald Beham and by an anonymous Swiss artist. The dynamic pen work, fine gradations of line suggesting the effects of light and shade, and muscular physique reflecting the influence of the Italian Renaissance seen in the proposed sheet come close to the style of Wolf Huber. Huber worked in Passau and Vienna along the River Danube, and was the most important Danube School artist together with Albrecht Altdorfer. Huber's autograph depictions of mercenary soldiers are fewer than five in number. Thus the proposed sheet, so close in style to Huber, is an important work within the oeuvre of Huber and his circle.
