Sarcophagus representing a Dionysiac Vintage Festival (sarcophagus; Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 290 - 300; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 2008.14)
Note: The oval-shaped sarcophagus is complete but lacks its lid. It is carved on three sides with relief sculpture. The back is undecorated and only roughly worked. Each of the rounded short sides is carved with strigilated (S-shaped flutes) relief decoration. On the front of the sarcophagus, flanking the central scene, are two fierce frontal lions' heads, each carrying a fluted ring in its mouth. The majority of the front of the chest is occupied by a high relief pastoral scene with a group of Erotes harvesting and stomping grapes. It is a mythological representation of the Vindemia, a rural Roman vintage festival.A frame of grapevines, whose leaves run along the upper edge of the scene, provides a canopy for the eleven Erotes industriously gathering and stomping grapes below. A thick-stalked third grapevine appears to the left of center helping to divide the scene into three distinct compositional groups. On the left side are four wingless Erotes occupied in gathering grapes. One stands on a branch with a pedum (shepherd's crook) and basket. Below him, another Eros holds a bunch of grapes in his outstretched arms while a figure climbs on a ladder. This Eros carries a basket on his back and turns to look over his shoulder. Below, a dog watches the activity. To the right of the ladder, another Eros empties a situla (bucket) of grapes into an overflowing basket.Another group of four Erotes occupies the center of the scene. They too labor to harvest grapes from the vines. Each is equipped with a falx vinitoria (pruning-knife) and two Erotes stand in the branches cutting down clusters of grapes. Dominating the center is the largest figure on the panel. He stands holding a grape in his right hand, with his chlamys spread open in order to receive a falling grape cluster. Another Eros stoops over to empty grapes from a situla into the large lenos (wine pressing trough) on the right hand side of the scene. At this Eros' feet is another situla of grapes, a small hare nibbling on some stolen grapes, and a tortoise. Depictions of hares are frequently found in vintage contexts and the tortoise was a symbol of good fortune. The right part of the scene is occupied by a lenos decorated with three lion head spouts connected by a grapevine, a typical shape and decoration for a wine-pressing trough (which this type of sarcophagus is meant to imitate). Under each spout is a jug-like vessel, half submerged in the earth, used to collect the juice from the pressed grapes. Within the lenos, three chubby Erotes stand frontally, each with their right leg lifted as they dance in the full tub of grapes. The center and right figures look straight ahead with heads tilted to the side, while the left figure turns his head to the proper left. The Erotes join hands and the outer two cradle peda in the crooks of their arms. Two additional figures occupy the spaces below the lions' heads. On the left side, a girl, whose youth is indicated by her garment leaving one shoulder bare, is depicted flanked by sheep, one of which she appears to be milking. She is the only clothed figure on the sarcophagus. On the right side, below the lion, a nude boy reclines with his right arm on a chlamys in the posture characteristic of a river god.
