The Adoration of the Magi with Saint Anthony Abbot (painting (visual work); Franco-Flemish Master (French or Flemish, active Burgundy, F...; about 1390 - 1410; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2004.68)
Note: The vibrant red background, densely patterned with a silver (originally gold) floral motif, serves as the magnificent foil for the animated procession of figures, some of whom boldly engage the viewer. At the center, enthroned on his mother's lap, the new King stands to receive the offerings from the Magi, a motif in keeping with the vision of St. Bridget who describes the Child skipping with joy. Caspar, kneeling bareheaded in reverence and proffering his gift of gold, Balthasar and Melchior are distinguished by age (60, 40, 20) according to recent literary practice [Petrus de Natalis, d. 1400]. Simply but resplendently dressed, they reveal both contemporary court sensibility and allude to their far-flung kingdoms, suggested by the white "turban" worn by Melchior and particularly the black page who assists him.
