Note: After Goya, Vicente López is regarded as the most important Spanish painter of his generation. Renowned for his portraiture, López was appointed First Painter to the King of Spain in 1814.When Sebastian was discovered to be a Christian, Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered the military captain to be killed by archers. Irene, a Christian widow, found Sebastain still alive and nursed him back to health. Departing from conventional representations, López paints a creamy, vividly colorful vision of idealized figures and juxtaposes it with the inherent horror of the event. | |
