Chalkidian Black-Figure Neck Amphora (neck amphora; Attributed to the Inscription Painter (Greek, active 570 - 5...; about 540 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AE.1)
Note: Depicted on the body of the vase is a scene from Homer's Iliad (10.469-496, passim), in which Odysseus and Diomedes slaughter Rhesos, King of the Thracians, and his troops. On the front of the vase, surrounded by dead Thracians still lying in their blankets, Diomedes grasps King Rhesos by the throat as he prepares to stab him with his sword. Flanking the two figures are displays of armor hung on trees, which indicate the outdoor setting of the scene. On the shoulder above, two youths gallop to left on horses, followed by a bird. On the other side of the vase, Odysseus dispatches the last of the Thracian soldiers, his sword slicing into his throat. Elaborate armor again hangs on trees. On the shoulder above, three youths ride to the right. The two scenes on the body are separated by groups of rearing and plunging horses, placed below the handles.
