Record Type: Built Work
Kostverloren (manor house; Unknown creator; constructed ca. 1500; destroye...)
Note: The manor was built on the bank of a large bend of the Amstel River, about five kilometers south of Amsterdam. Kostverloren, the name later attributed to the building, translates to “lost earnings,” referencing the endless costs required to maintain the foundation intact on the marshy land upon which it had been built. With its stepped gable tower, the manor held a prominent position in the region and was the subject of many works by Dutch poets and artists in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The country home was purchased by Francisco Baron de Ximenes Belmont in 1706 or 1708 and had a series of subsequent owners before it was abandoned and eventually sold for scrap and destroyed in 1822.
