Note: An injured, but still fierce bull squares off against a group of bullfighters. Atop a gored and bleeding horse, a picador hunches over his tightly-gripped pique and takes aim. The picador hopes to prod the bull with a lance in order to agitate and weaken the animal for the final maneuvers, culminating in the matador's spearing and killing of his opponent. Both the awed and fearful expressions of the bullfighters and the two dead or dying horses left in the ring attest to the bull's staunch resistance. The barrero, or bullfight stands, and the pressing crowds are sketchily indicated in the background. The "suerte de varas" is the first phase of a bullfight during which the picador weakens the bull with his lance.
