Record Type: Built Work
Camposanto (building (structure); begun by Giovanni di Simone; begun in 1278, completed in 14...)
Note: Building containing sarcophagi and tombs on the grounds of the Pisa Cathedral complex. It incorporated soil from Golgotha brought back from the Fourth Crusade; was erected partially over an earlier burial ground. It is believed that the building was originally intended to be the church of Santissima Trinità, but the scope and function changed during construction. It comprises an outer wall having 43 blind arches, two doorways, three chapels, and a tabernacle with the Virgin and Child with four saints by a follower of Giovanni Pisano. Also noted for important medieval frescoes. Most of the tombs are under the arcades, although a few are on the central lawn.
