Note: Listed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace, Lhasa." Built of rammed earth and stone, Potala Palace rises from Red Mountain in the centre of Lhasa Valley at an altitude of 3,700 metres. It functioned as the winter palace of the Dalai Lama from the 7th century CE, and is currently a museum.
