Note: In February 1582 François of Anjou was received by the city of Antwerp as the new sovereign of the Netherlands. The Duke - with the red cape, riding a white horse under a canopy - is approaching the triumphal arch on St Jan's bridge. Six months earlier the States General had resolved no longer to recognise the Spanish king Philip II as their sovereign. It marked the start of a new phase in the Dutch Revolt against Spain.
