Manjushri (sculpture (visual works); Unknown Indonesian; 800/900 CE; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-240; RM001.collect.1951)
Note: A young man sits on a lotus throne, his back against a stone slab decorated with flames and flowers. He is sitting perfectly straight, with his legs crossed. His youthful face, with its full lips and eyes half closed, is beautifully rendered. Although his arms have been lost, and with them his attributes, he is nevertheless recognisable as the Bodhisattva Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, who is often depicted as a boy less than sixteen years old. One pointer to his youthfulness is the half-moon shaped ornament behind his head. This Buddhist figure was made in Central Java in the ninth century.
