Kop van Boeddha (sculpture (visual works); Unknown Indonesian; 800; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-239; RM001.collect.1950)
Note: A Buddha's head with curly locks of hair, eyelids closed and a slight smile on his lips. The appearance of the Buddha corresponds precisely with the text of the Buddhist scriptures. According to that text, Buddha has: - an urna: a hairy spot (a kind of wart-like birthmark) between his eyebrows, an usnisha: a cranial protrusion, covered with short curls which turn clockwise, distended earlobes which recall the heavy earrings the Buddha wore when he was still a prince. This Buddha's head comes from the most famous temple in Indonesia, the Candi Borobudur.
