Grote schotel beschilderd met een qilin (platter; unknown Chinese; ca. 1350; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-RBK-1965-88; RM001.collect.3153)

Note: The bottom of this large dish - 45.5 cm in diameter - is painted with a fantasy animal, a qilin, amid melons, grapes and the leaves of the banana tree. The wall of the dish is decorated with lotus fronds and the border with a diamond design. The dish was made in the Southern Chinese city of Jingdezhen in the fourteenth century, and is among the earliest examples of blue-and-white porcelain. As early as the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), Jingdezhen was an important centre of porcelain production.

Dutch ..... Grote schotel op voetring met ongeglazuurde bruin gebrande bodem. De schotel heeft een vlakke wand en licht opstaande rand. Gedecoreerd in onderglazuur blauw met in het plat een 'qilin' tussen rotsen, druiverank, bananen- en meloenplanten. De wand van de schotel wordt gesierd door een lotusrank, op de rand servetwerk. Op de achterzijde van de rand een bloemrank.
