Ganesha (sculpture (visual works); unknown Javanese; 850/930; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-251; RM001.collect.1967)
Note: Ganesha, son of the Hindu gods Shiva and Parvati, has the body of a pot-bellied dwarf and the head of an elephant. Various myths recount how he was born. One story tells that Shiva enjoyed surprising his wife Parvati while she was bathing, something she did not appreciate. One day Parvati shaped the figure of a boy from bath oil mixed with rubbings from her body. Using water from the river Ganges she brought him to life. He was to keep watch whilst she took her bath. However, Shiva was not impressed by this guard and beheaded him. Parvati was so upset that Shiva immediately set about looking for a new head. The first living creature he came across was an elephant, and so Ganesha was brought back to life with an elephant's head.
