Lamp (oil lamp; unknown Javanese; ca. 1300/ca. 1500; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-269; RM001.collect.1975)
Note: A fine specimen of an East Javanese oil lamp, delicately executed with a great deal of detail. The lamp could be hung by a chain attached to the ring at the top. Its lower section consists of four pans, the oil reservoirs. On a plateau at the centre stands Garuda, the winged beast which bore the Hindu god Vishnu. All his wings are spread. In his right hand he holds a weapon, possibly a sword. A woman is seated on his left thigh; she is thought to be his mother. The object is a combination of several bronze components which were cast separately
