Note: In a dimly-lit tavern, a group of peasants crowd round the hearth. They are talking, drinking and smoking. To judge from the skates on the floor, the temperature is probably below zero outside. Which is why this painting by Adriaen van Ostade has traditionally been known as 'The Skaters'.

Rechts een vrouw met een kind, links een staande man met de handen op de rug. Op de grond ligt een paar schaatsen. Op de voorgrond rechts een hondje en een juk, links voor het raam staat een tafeltje met brood en een kan en pijp op een krukje.
