Sutradoos (box (container); unknown lacquerer; 1200/1300; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-178; RM001.collect.2263)
Note: This box was made for the storage of holy Buddhist scriptures. At the end of the thirteenth century, a number of this type of boxes were made in Korea. They all have lids with angular corners and are richly decorated with a dense pattern of creeper-like chrysanthemum stalks made of inlaid mother-of-pearl and wire. Nearly all early Korean lacquerware has been lost. A small part has been preserved in Japan, where Korean decorative art was much admired. During two invasions at the end of the sixteenth century, the Japanese even brought Korean craftsmen back to Japan. This box was enlarged in Japan. The lower section with hexagonal decorations was added in the sixteenth or seventeenth century.
