Note: Impressions of the etching with the printmaker's initials were issued in Wechter's pattern book for goldsmiths: 30 Stvck zvm verzachnen für die Goldschmid verfertigt Geörg Wechter Maller (Nuremberg, 1579); The design of the gobelet is related to cups in the form of a columbine (Akeley Pokal) produced by aspirants seeking admission as master-goldsmiths to the Nuremberg's goldsmiths' guild; Title devised; The print represents a cup with a quatrefoil foot, a stem adorned with rams, and a lid topped by a putto carrying the armorial shield of the city of Nuremberg. The surface of the vessel is decorated with allegorical representations of the virtues (Faith/Fides), putti, fruit, birds, masks, and lion's heads, interlaced in a low-relief strapwork pattern; Trimmed along shape of cup, and glued to sheet.[ca. 1579] (34501/publishers)
