Note: The print appears to have been issued in the months that followed the Festival of the Federation celebrated on July 14, 1790 (cf. de Vinck); The game of goose (jeu de l'oie) represents, in 63 illustrated spaces, the progress of the French Revolution from the storming of the Bastille to the gathering of the deputies of the National Assembly; Traditionally, the geese were considered impossible to restrain, but the board game shows them dressed as bridled magistrates of the parliaments of the Ancien Régime. Verses from the revolutionary song Ça ira are printed at the four corners of the print; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*).
