Note: Filippo Vasconi or Vasconio, a nephew of the architect Carlo Fontana, was active in Rome as an architect and printmaker; The print depicts the apparati adorning the courtyard of the Palazzo Altemps that were commissioned by Cardinal Melchior de Polignac and designed by Pier Leone Ghezzi for the celebrations on November 26, 1729 in honor of the birth of the dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France and Marie Leszczyńska. The courtyard of the residence of the French chargé d'affaires in Rome displays a temporary stand for hosting an orchestra composed of 150 musicians and six soloists who are to perform the cantata La contesa dei Numi by the librettist Pietro Metastasio and composer Leonardo Vinci. The palatial decorations feature damasks, velvet, brocades, lace embroidered in gold, rugs, torches, crystal chandeliers, and five sculptures of the dauphin's prominent ancestors: Hugh Capet, Philip II, Louis IX, Henry IV, and Louis XVI; Binding holes along margin; annotated and numbered in black ink: Pietro Leon Ghezzi / 312; "Fuochi"--written in brown ink on verso; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
