Note: Painting at the Musée du Louvre, Inv. 2896, en dépôt au musée de Versailles, MV 6165; Simon Gribelin, a Huguenot from Blois (France), left for England ca. 1680, where he was active for the remainder of his career as an engraver and draftsman; The engraving depicts the family of Darius kneeling before Alexander the Great, reproducing the painting known as the Tent of Darius by Charles Le Brun; The print is derived from Gérard Édelinck's engraving and was issued as the frontispiece to William Parsons's The Tent of Darius explain'd after André Félibien (cf. O'Connell); Forms part of the Leo Steinberg collection of prints (Special Collections accn. no. 2000.PR.16); Accompanied by Leo Steinberg's handwritten notes on mount and post-it concerning bibliography and series. | |
