Note: Bocquet travelled to Rome around 1690-1692. The suite of prints comprises a title leaf and 18 etchings that depict the mock naval battle performed in Florence on the Arno river on Nov. 3, 1608, in celebration of the wedding of Cosimo II, Duke of Tuscany, to Maria Maddalena of Austria. The festival enacted the battle between the Argonauts and the armada of Colchis, while relating the love story of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, and Medea, daughter of the King of Colchis. The ships and floats were designed by Giulio Parigi, with the exception of two that were designed by Jacopo Ligozzi and one by Ludovico Cardi da Cigoli; The prints are derived from Remigio Cantagallina's etchings that were issued on the occasion of the wedding (Bartsch 20-38). They are printed in reverse from Cantagallina's etchings. The inscriptions in the lower margin contain variations in spelling and wording and additional inscriptions identify the characters in the ships and floats. One etching from the suite created by Remigio Cantagallina has not been included, Periclemene. Publication: A Paris : Chez Baltazar Moncornet, rue St. Iacques ..., [16--].
