[Assignats] (etching (print); unknown French printmaker; published ca. 1797; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 699056; (CMalG)1516-756; accession number: P980009* (bx.31,f.3))
Note: The trompe l'oeil print represents a beggar in the midst of assignats or paper currencies issued during the French Revolution. Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*). Publication: [ca. 1797] (34501/publishers). The British Museum says of its impression of this print that the beggar reproduces, in reverse, a plate etched by Callot for his Gueux series, and that the subject is a satire on French currency and the issuing of assignats (paper money), which caused hyperinflation, a disastrous consequence on the economy and was blamed for widespread poverty.
