| Note: The story of the Guerra d'amore involved a battle over the hand of Queen Lucinda between Indamoro, King of Narsinga, and Gradamento, King of Melinda. Agniolo Ricci was the choreographer of the ballet. Giulio Parigi designed the amphitheater, the floats and the costumes. Impressions of the etchings were issued with Andrea Salvadori's description of the festivities Gverra d'amore (Firenze : Stamperia di Z. Pignoni, 1615), and with Lettera al Sig. Alberico Cibo (In Pisa : Appresso Giouanni Fontani, 1615); The four prints depict the horse ballet and tournament Guerra d'amore, dedicated to the Archduchess of Austria Maria Maddalena and performed in Piazza Santa Croce, Florence, on February 12, 1616 [1615 in "stile fiorentino"]; Prints [1] and [2] (cf. Lieure no. 170-171) show the procession of floats and the mock battle in the arena of Piazza Santa Croce. Print [3] (cf. Lieure no. 169) depicts the chariots and characters dressed in exotic costumes, identified by inscriptions. Print [4] (cf. Lieure no. 172) reveals plans of the choreographic figures of the carousel; Trimmed within plate mark and glued to mounts numbered "96" to "99" in brown ink. Prints [1], [2], [3] and [4] are numbered in collector's inventory: 229, 228, 227, 231; Library has another impression of the etchings bound in: Lettera al Sig. Alberico Cibo (In Pisa : Appresso Giouanni Fontani, 1615). Other impressions of prints [2-3] form part of the Italian Theater Collection: accn. no.
