Note: The former château of Favorite was commissioned by Lothar Franz von Schönborn (1655-1729), archbishop and elector of Mainz. It was erected south of Mainz, shortly after Schönborn acquired the land in 1700. The castle was destroyed in 1793 by French Revolutionary troops; The etcher, draftsman, and architect Salomon Kleiner from Augsburg etched plans and views of several cities, including Augsburg, Frankfurt, and Vienna; Title and imprint from: Representation naturelle et exacte de la Favorite de Son Altesse Electorale de Mayence ..., a facsimile reprint published in: Schönbornschlösser, die Stichwerke Salomon Kleiners ... (Heidelberg : Carl Winters, 1927, ill. 12); The print depicts a reception in the garden house gallery of the château of Favorite near Mainz; The architecture and ornamentation of the gallery are shown in meticulous detail: the trompe-l'oeil décor, stucco, rocaille decoration, and ceiling frescoes. The gallery is seen in a strongly foreshortened perspective. On the left, it is lit by a series of long and narrow windows. On the right, idealized vistas of ancient ruins are framed by an arcade of fluted columns interspersed with busts. Gentlemen and ladies are shown strolling or conversing. Servants carry trays or "pièces montées", while musicians blow trumpets or horns. Anecdotal details, such as a dog sniffing the food presented by a servant, lend liveliness to the depiction of the castle; Etcher active in Augsburg; Trimmed within plate mark; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
