Note: The print depicts the 75 x 80 foot "theater" built in the pond of The Hague for the spectacular fireworks of December 13, 1702 celebrating the military victories of the Netherlands on water and on land during the War of Spanish Succession. In the center of a temporary island rises a column supporting a globe topped by Fame with her trumpet, surrounded by allegorical figures and trophies. Below the column are the arms of Holland and West Friesland above a parapet hung with the escutcheons of The Netherelands' cities and peers. Intricate arabesques of fireworks cover the sky. Under the image, there is a band of Dutch text divided in two: to the left the description of the historical meaning of the festival; to the right the explanation of the allegorical components of the scenery, identified by numbers engraved on the print. The last line on the left indicates the theater's measurements. The etching is signed "J. van Vianen. Delin.: et Sculp:." in the lower right corner; it was made after a drawing by the architect Jacob Roman, signed in the lower left corner under the text, J. Roman inv."
