Château de Versailles (palace; various architects, under Louis XIII and Louis XVI; begun 1631, enlarged 1643-1715...)
Note: Former royal residence and center of French government; now a national landmark. The original residence was built from 1631 to 1634, as a hunting lodge and private retreat for Louis XIII (reigned 1610-1643) and his family. Under the guidance of Louis XIV (1643-1715), it was transformed (1661-1710) into an immense and extravagant complex surrounded by stylized English and French gardens. Restored by Louis-Philippe (1830-1848). Large palace includes 2143 windows, 1252 fireplaces, and 67 staircases, and gardens with 1400 fountains, using water pumped up from the Seine; the length of the garden front is 670 meters.
