(etching (print); Vasconi, Filippo (1687?-1730); published 1728; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...)
Note: The ephemeral structure was commissioned by Cardinal Bentivoglio d'Aragona, who had been nominated minister of Spain before the Holy See by Felipe V on November 3, 1726. The Roman printmaker and architect Filippo Vasconi or Vasconio, nephew of the architect Carlo Fontana, created prints that served as illustrations to architectural treatises and to a publication on fireworks machines. The print depicts a fireworks structure erected in Piazza di Spagna in Rome on the evening of 4 July 1728 in celebration of weddings between the House of Bourbon of Spain and the House of Bragança of Portugal, and in commemoration of the convalescence of King Felipe V of Spain. Prince Ferdinando and Princess Mariana Vitória, son and daughter of Felipe V, were given in marriage respectively to Princess Maria Bárbara and Prince José, daughter and son of King João V of Portugal. Designed by the architect Nicola Salvi, the macchina features Hymenaeus seated in front of his royal palace, offering a nuptial torch to Castor and Pollux who represent Ferdinando and José. At top of the palace, Apollo, Fame, and the Muses celebrate the event. Trimmed within plate mark in lower center, where Salvi's signature appears in other impressions.
