Eiffel Tower (watchtower; architect: Gustave Eiffel (French, 1832-1923); 1887-1889)

Note: Commission was awarded by competition; the competition sought a plan for a monument for the International Exposition of 1889, celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. The tower is built almost entirely of open-lattice wrought iron. It was the entrance gateway to the exposition.
