Efforts to determine the provenance of individual works of art depend heavily on information in sales catalogues. When complete, The Index will make available all data from tens of thousands of catalogues of paintings sold in the British Isles during the nineteenth century.

This projected twenty-volume set, covering 1801 to 1900, will contain a chronological index of sales, an alphabetical index of paintings by individual artists, and an alphabetical list of owners plus many previously unrecorded sales outside of London, and an index of previous collections.

These volumes were produced by the Getty Provenance Index.
