The Spinola Hours is an elegant sixteenth-century Flemish illuminated manuscript, possibly commissioned by Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), who served as the regent of the Netherlands for her nephew Charles V. The lavish book of hours, an aid to private devotion, takes its modern name from the Spinola family in Genoa, Italy, who owned it in the 1700s. A richly decorated border of a page in the handmade book, now in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, inspired the delicate flora and fauna on this bookmark.
The 3 7/8" x 3/4" bookmark is made of 24-karat gold over brass and has a silk tassel. It is presented in a clear sleeve with a card that tells the story of the inspiration for the design.
