The detail on this shirt depicts the fearsome beast Acheron, devourer of the avaricious. It comes from a fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Visions of the Knight Tondal tells the story of a wealthy and errant Irish knight, whose soul journeys through hell and heaven with an angel as his guide. Tondal is spiritually transformed and vows to lead a more pious life.
