For me...my students did this as a course of their learning painting
experience, it so happened that a competition that came along after the fact
would have been nice. I myself, am a competition painter and have won some
nice cash awards and midwest recognition. I would have appreciated a
competition on a more professional level for my kids. However, no
professional competition I would ever enter would even begin to think of not
returning our work, with perhaps exception of the original should they use
it to promote their cause.

...I agree Carolyn, and my first 17 years as a professional painter was in
the wildlife art market. I've donated thousands and thousands of dollars
worth of art for habitat management, acquisition, etc; I'd like to instill
that in my students as well. Five minutes of fame on A&E, IMHO...is not a
"good cause" when 20'some thousand art works end up in the dumpster or
burned. I have problems throwing away art works that are left in my room
that some kids show no apparent interest in keeping. Anyone else have that
problem? That some competition would no doubt destroy the "losing" works is
apprehensible and deplorable to me.

You have good cause to be proud of your students Carolyn..!! Keep up the
good work. Don't let my disgruntled sentiments dampen that! Peace,
Larry S.
