About Artist Robert Irwin
Robert Irwin began his career in the late 1940s as a painter, yet his highly conceptual approach to artmaking eventually led him to work in a range of media. A pioneer of the “Light and Space” movement of the 1960s, he explores, often through sculptural works, the impact of sensory properties, enticing viewers to become aware of their own process of perception.
Artist Statement
The sole criterion of this sculpture/garden is the experience of beauty ... It is my feeling that most of our interest in art begins with our having had at one time a very special aesthetic experience, ... which inspired each of us individually to want to know more. It is in this sense that the sole ambition of this sculpture/garden is to create the possibility of just such a moment.
