The hanging ash on Miller's cigarette is a clue to the length of time it took to assume the perfect position within this composition. The line created by the division of light and dark over his right shoulder bisects his mouth, ending just beyond the left side of his neck. Miller's adroit use of complementary colors heightens the picture's aesthetic power.
