Over fifteen inches high, this jar is the largest known example of its kind. Its overall leaf decoration and rampant lions are painted with a thin layer of relief blue impasto, a dense pigment preparation that could be painted on so thickly that it stood out from the surface of the pot after firing. The rampant lion on either side may refer to the emblem of Florence or it may derive from patterns found on other decorative arts, such as fabrics.

A painted asterisk under each handle may indicate the workshop in which the jar was made.
