Sommer photographed statuary during a summer trip to Europe in 1960. He strayed from his usual sharply focused pictures by jarring the camera during exposure, imparting a sense of lightness and movement to the stone. Upon his return to Arizona, he began working with living models. These studies, made with a still camera, are also blurred, but here the obliterated detail and deep shadows make the human body seem like sculpted stone.
