The skill of Louis Borde as a French cartographer and engraver was well known in Paris in the 1700s. In recognition of his skills, he was given the title of Graveur du Roi et des Affaires Etrangères (Engraver to the King and Ministry of Foreign Affairs) by Louis XV, king of France. He was also asked to appraise the engraving plates of another mapmaker.Borde did not limit himself to engraving maps but also financed their costly production. He frequently acted as the publisher, providing the money needed for engraving the copper plate, supervising the various stages of printing, and distributing the maps. In return, he remained the owner of the plates.
